In the fever of the 1859 Colorado Gold Rush, miners who staked claims along Tarryall Creek chased away newcomers, who suggested that a better name for the place might be Grab All Creek. The rejected newcomers found gold farther West and named their new camp Fairplay to show that theirs was an equal-opportunity mining community.
